Insight is a monitoring and analytics solution. The reason I’ve included it in this series is because it can be a significant benefit to a partner embarking on, or already hosting, a mobility platform including DaaS.
The importance of networking is often underestimated by partners who aren’t used to deploying services that are sensitive to network performance. XenApp or XenDesktop traffic can be compared to VoIP when making networking considerations, in the sense that the timely delivery of the traffic is directly related to the end user experience.
Other traffic like printing, SMB/SIFS, web and media traffic (video casting etc.) can have significant impact on a Citrix mobility service if it’s not managed appropriately. Having visibility of network performance for users who roam and use public networks is of course a challenge for any service and along with good testing, a lack network visibility is one of the most common issues that I have experienced throughout my career.
NetScaler Insight provides detailed visibility of performance related information for Citrix HDX traffic associated with a Citrix workspace platform. HDX underpins the XenApp and XenDesktop end user experience; having visibility of how HDX is performing is invaluable for service providers.
HDX (High Definition User Experience) is a collection of features that use the underlying Citrix network protocol, ICA (Independent Computer Architecture). ICA is highly developed and optimal protocol used for accessing content over any type of network, including those with constraints including bandwidth, jitter and latency, that would otherwise prevent such technology being used. HDX includes traffic related to graphics (including 3D), voice, keyboard and mouse, printing, peripherals including scanners and so on.
NetScaler Insight provides detailed information about network information from the user device to the data centre. This includes real-time and historical data for Platinum NetScaler deployments. (I explain NetScaler licensing blog 12 of this series).
The reason that NetScaler Insight is so important is that it can help identify potential issues or bottlenecks and save considerable time and effort resolving the performance related issues associated with mobility services. For example, a user may be working remotely and call your business for support related to performance.
NetScaler Insight may immediately show you that there is a lot of latency from their device to the wireless network they’re using – preventing you from looking at each component of your service exhaustively, and finding no issues. The benefit of NetScaler Insight should not be underestimated!
