I have been extremely fortunate to have known many amazing women throughout my life.
Both professionally and personally.
Some for only a short time and some for a very, very long time.
But all these incredible women have had some kind of an impact. Life isn’t always easy, no matter where you are and who you are but if you count yourself as fortunate as I do, you get to meet many people that will teach you a thing or two about life and sometimes even something about yourself.
I’ve been lucky to work with amazing leaders and peers who have taught me to put everything I had into whatever I was doing, be strong, stand by my convictions and try to be the very best version of myself. And I have had the privilege of being surrounded by younger women who remind me all the time that enthusiasm, maturity, and brilliance are within most of us regardless of age. That to challenge is NOT to be challenging but to always strive for what is right. All of these women also taught me to never subscribe to “she should get the job because we need more women”.
It diminishes the brilliance and value they bring to a role and organisation, not just as a woman but as an amazing person and leader.
Staying true to purpose that the best person for the job, IS the best person for the job, is the only way we move forward. I am excited for the days when we no longer feel the need to continually point out the injustices or celebrate a win. There will be no fanfare, no announcements. It will just be.
I am thrilled for the future that the so many younger women that I have mentored and collaborated with over the years get to have. I say “collaborated” with as I can honestly say I have learnt as much from them as they tell me they have from me. For a few, they have become my lifelong “work daughters”. They give me hope for a future with strong, smart women, taking the mantle and continuing to stand for quality in everything they do, doing what’s right, striving for the best they can be, challenging the norms and never letting each other down. I know I wasn’t the only woman in their lives, but I hope I was able to contribute to these values that I see in them.
Of course, being surround by smart, strong women at home helped me just as much as having a dad who believed I could be anything I wanted to be, that was a bonus! I learned from a mother who always put her family first, aunties, cousins, sisters-in-laws, nieces and lifelong friends who have become my family, that we are there for each other.
Celebrating each other reminds us, in the darker and brighter moments, that there are people out there who have our back and celebrate us. Be you family, friend, colleague or "work daughter", on this International Women’s day and every day, thank you for having my back and even if you don’t need that reminder, you know I will always have yours.
I celebrate You! I celebrate Us!
